Troston Forest Walk

How To Get There

From Dumfries take the A711 south west. After about 8 miles you will arrive at a village named Beeswing, just before you leave the village take the left turn sign posted New Abbey. There is a nice farm shop and cafe called Loch Arthur on your left. Keep driving passing Loch Arthur on your left and the Kissock Forest car park on your right.

Drive about a mile further and take a left turn at Glesone onto a single track road going up hill. Follow this road for about 2 miles through Troston farm then look for a sign Tilhill Forestry on your right. Continue down hill on the road and look for the sign Troston Forest at the bottom of the hill on the right where you can park. See the red arrow on the map above.

Troston Forest Circular Walk approximately 2.5 miles

Follow the forest road into the forest.

When you come to a fork on the road take the right track leading slightly upwards.

After about half a mile the forest road opens into a wide clearing. look for a narrow path on the right marked by a big stone slab leading upwards through the forest.

Follow the path up hill through the forest.

Eventually you will leave the trees and the path carry on up hill.

You will cross an old broken down fence.

The path continues up hill. Please note in the photo the bracken has not grown but on mid summer it can get difficult to find the path.

You will come to a T-juction. Turn right following the path up hill.

At the top of the hill you are rewarded with an excellent view and seat to rest on.

From the top you can see The Waterloo Monument and the small mountain of Criffel. On a clear day you can see the Lake District in England.

After taking in the view continue to follow the path down the other side of the hill until you reach the forest road where you turn right.

Follow the forest road down the hill to the gate and then turn right following the tarmac single track road down the hill.

At the bottom of the hill you will see the car park on the right where you started your walk.

Route Map

This is a map of the Troston Hill walk. Please note that forest road to the north west of Troston Hill is not actually printed on the map but I promise it does exist and you will find it. Also if you look at the forestry sign on the gate where you exit it says Tilhill which is actually Tillhill Forestry Company, just to confuse everyone. OS Explorer Map 313.
